While Tennessee officially began keeping birth records statewide in 1908, the state did pass an earlier law that called for the keeping of birth and death records, starting in 1881. However, only a limited number of counties kept these records. Some counties only recorded a dozen or so births between 1881 - 1882. A smaller number of counties continued to record the births up through 1907. Court Clerks were given ledgers by the state in which to record the births. Some counties did not participate; others may have kept records that were later lost or discarded.
This index seeks to fill the gap between these early years and 1908 when the State of Tennessee officially began recording birth records in that year.
