Miscellaneous County Death Records is an index to death records kept by Anderson, Benton, Blount, Carter, Cheatham, Franklin, Henry, Jackson, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Obion, Perry, Roane, Rutherford, Sequatchie, Sevier, Smith, Sumner, Wayne, White, and Williamson counties. These listings do not include Davidson, Hamilton, Knox, or Shelby counties.
While Tennessee officially began keeping death records statewide in 1908, the state did pass an earlier law that called for the keeping of birth and death records, starting in 1881. Following a death, the family had to go to the office of the County Court Clerk to have the record of death recorded. Only a limited number of counties kept these records. Some counties only recorded a dozen or so deaths between 1881 - 1882. A smaller number of counties continued to record the deaths up through 1907, however, the most recent year listed in this index is 1899. Nine listings have no date at all entered for date of death.
This index seeks to fill the gap between these early years and 1908 when the State of Tennessee officially began recording death records in that year.
